─ 궁정 DLC ─
FEUDALISM & COURT POLITICS

DRAMATIS PERSONAE
Hedda Quarrel

Quenilda Marbeck
"죄, 죄송해요…! 아, 시합이요? …

Norra Nightshade

Jorin Crowe

Raymond Howard

Zacharias Marlowe

Royal Guard

"content": "{{#when::{{getvar::tesselia_dlc_feudal}}::is::1}}\n### The Feudal System of Arcadia\n\n#### Land and Rank (토지와 서열)\n\n* Ownership: No one owns land but the Crown. All land is held from a superior in return for service.\n* Order: King > Duke > Marquis > Count > Viscount > Baron > Knight. Below them, freeholders and serfs.\n* Rank Decides: Precedence at court, marriage worth, and judicial level.\n* Rank Does Not Decide: Power. Real power is revenue, castles, sworn knights, and access to the King. A rich baron may command more spears than a poor marquis, and both know it.\n\n#### The Fief and the Oath (봉토와 서약)\n\n* Grant: A lord grants land; the vassal swears homage and fealty in return.\n* Nature: The oath is personal and ends at death. The heir must renew it and pay relief before he holds the fief.\n* The Lord's Duties: Protection, justice, and maintenance of the fief. Failure voids the oath.\n\n#### Military Service (군역)\n\n* Free Service: 40 days a year, with his knights, at his own cost.\n* Beyond 40 Days: The lord must pay wages. Unpaid, vassals may lawfully go home.\n* Consequence: Long wars are fought with the lord's coin, not his right.\n\n#### Other Obligations (그 밖의 의무)\n\n* Duties: Castle guard, attendance at the lord's court, and counsel.\n* Aids: Ransom money, and aid for the lord's eldest son's knighting and eldest daughter's marriage. These three only.\n\n#### Multiple Lords (복수 주군)\n\n* Rule: A man may hold fiefs from several lords.\n* Precedence: His liege lord outranks the rest when summons conflict.\n* Lords at War: When two of his lords fight each other, he serves his liege in person and sends the other his due knights under a deputy. He may refuse a lesser lord's summons against his liege, forfeiting that fief alone.\n\n#### The Manor (장원)\n\n* Land: Demesne worked by peasant labour dues, tenant strips, and common wood and pasture.\n* Administration: A steward runs it; a reeve speaks for the village.\n\n#### Peasants (농민)\n\n* Serfs: Bound to the soil, transferred with it, never sold apart from it.\n* Serf Dues: 2-3 days' week-work, extra work at harvest, a marriage fee, a death duty, and forced use of the lord's mill, oven, and press.\n* Freeholders: Pay rent in coin, owe no labour, and may leave.\n\n#### The Lord's Rights (영주의 권리)\n\n* Justice: He judges in his own court. Great lords judge capital crimes; lesser lords do not.\n* Revenue: Tolls on road, bridge, and river; a hunting monopoly in his own woods.\n* Commerce: Market charter and guild licensing within his own lands only. Trade across the whole kingdom needs the King's charter.\n\n#### Inheritance (상속)\n\n* Rule: Primogeniture. Younger sons take the Church, war, or another lord's household.\n* Escheat: A heirless fief returns to the lord.\n* Wardship: The lord holds a minor heir in wardship and takes the revenue until majority.\n\n#### Heiresses (여상속인)\n\n* Rule: A daughter inherits where no brother stands. Her husband holds the fief in her right, and loses it if she dies childless.\n* Marriage: Her lord chooses her husband and may sell that choice. This is how a landless man becomes a great one.\n\n#### Alienation and Forfeiture (양도와 몰수)\n\n* Alienation: A fief may not be sold or granted away without the superior lord's consent, bought with a fee. Rights alone — tolls, mills, forest — pass more freely.\n* Forfeiture: Treason, or refusal of the service the fief owes, returns the fief to the superior lord by judgment of his court, never by his word alone.\n\n#### Subinfeudation (재분봉)\n\n* Rule: A vassal may grant part of his fief to men of his own, who swear to him and not to his lord.\n* Limit: My vassal's vassal is not my vassal. A duke summons his barons; their knights come only through them.\n\n#### Scutage (방패세)\n\n* Commutation: A vassal may pay shield-money in place of the forty days, if his lord accepts it.\n* Use: The lord hires mercenaries with it, who serve as long as they are paid.\n* Effect: Rich vassals buy their peace, poor ones ride. Neither is held dishonourable.\n\n#### Appeal (상소)\n\n* Right: A vassal denied justice or protection may carry the plea to his lord's superior, and at the last to the King.\n* Effect: The King hears such pleas gladly. Every appeal thins a great lord's authority.\n* Limit: There is no appeal above the King.\n\n#### Widows and Bastards (미망인과 서자)\n\n* Dower: A widow holds a third of her husband's fief for life. It returns to the heir at her death.\n* Remarriage: Her lord approves her next husband and may sell that choice. She may buy the right to refuse.\n* Bastards: They inherit nothing. Only the King's letters can legitimate one, and the claim is contested ever after.\n\n#### Entering the Nobility (신분 상승)\n\n* By the Crown Alone: Only the King creates a title. His word alone makes a noble, and his word has a price.\n* Paths: Knighthood for service in arms, a grant of land for service to the Crown, marriage into a house that consents, or purchase from an empty treasury.\n* Purchase: The Crown sells titles when it needs coin. The sum is set by the King's need, not by custom, and rank climbs with it. In a hard year the Crown has sold high.\n* Land Required: A title without land is empty air. The buyer must take a fief with it — escheated Crown land, or the estate of a house drowning in debt — and pays for that separately.\n* Reception: Old houses call them purse-lords and seat them last. The second generation is mocked; the third is noble.\n\n#### Lords of Arcadia (아르카디아의 군주들)\n\n* Number: About two hundred titled nobles hold land, from dukes to landed knights.\n* Great Lords: Some twenty houses — dukes, marquises, counts — each ruling a whole region, with castles, sworn knights, and vassals of their own.\n* Court Nobility: Some fifty houses of viscounts and barons keeping residences in Aethelgard. Their income comes from office, favour, and marriage more than from acres.\n* Lesser Nobility: Some fifty barons and eighty landed knights, each holding a manor or two and seeing the capital once a year at most. A landed knight is addressed as Sir, a baron as Lord.\n* Landless Knights: Thousands hold no title and no land, serving in a lord's household for wages, arms, and a place at his table.\n* Without a Lord: A knight who loses his place hires out as a sworn sword or judicial champion, turns adventurer against monsters and the undead, or seizes a bridge or road and lives off the traffic as a robber knight. Rank clings to him even so: hanging a robber knight without trial offends every knight who hears of it.\n* Distance: No lord knows them all. Seals, colours, and a spoken lineage place strangers at court.\n{{/when}}",

No other man of his house enters the chamber, and no lord may have his own overlord speak for him.\n* Retinue: Kin, knights, and retainers wait in the feast hall while the session sits.\n* Proxy: A spokesman carries his lord's vote as well as his voice, on a sealed letter. One man may hold letters from several lords and cast every vote he carries.\n* Verification: The Lord President rules whether a sealed letter is good.\n* Votes: A vote counts voices; it does not decide. Every matter passed is carried to the King.\n* Final Word: The King grants or refuses. His refusal ends the matter. A great majority binds nothing; it only tells the King what refusal will cost him.\n* The Feast: When the session closes, a feast follows and runs for days. Marriages are arranged, contracts struck, and quarrels made or mended there.\n* Defiance: Staying away without the King's leave is read as defiance and answered as such.\n\n#### The Lord President (의회 의장)\n\n* Appointment: The King appoints and removes him at will. He is not elected by the peers.\n* Authority: He presides, sets the order of business, grants and denies the floor, and declares which side carried a voice vote.\n* Limit: He casts no vote of his own.\n* Real Power: What is heard, and what is never reached before the session closes.\n{{/when}}",

These alone are called the Royal Guard.\n* The Hundred: About one hundred guardsmen, all knights. They are addressed as guardsmen, never as the Guard.\n* Division: The Five guard the King's body. The Hundred guard the King's palace.\n* Command: The Hundred answer to the Four, the Four to the Lord Commander, and the Lord Commander to the King alone. No other lord stands anywhere in that line.\n\n#### The Cloaks (망토)\n\n* Magenta: The royal colour, worn by the King's house and the Five. No one else may wear it.\n* White: Worn by the Hundred.\n* Grant: The King fastens the magenta cloak himself at the investiture. No lord may bestow it and no coin may buy it.\n* Dismissal: Stripping the cloak in open court is the only formal dismissal, and it is remembered for generations.\n\n#### The Oath (서약)\n\n* Bond: Sworn to the King's person, not to the Crown or the realm, and for life. Only the King may release a guard; a guard may not resign.\n* Renunciation: The guard gives up lands, titles, inheritance, and every claim of their birth house. What they were before the cloak no longer counts.\n* Celibacy: A guard takes no spouse and leaves no heir. Blood ties are a second loyalty, and the Guard admits none.\n* Silence: What is said in the King's presence is carried to the grave. A guard is never called to testify against the King.\n* Equality: Under the oath there is no rank of birth. A commoner of the Five outranks a duke in every matter touching the King's person.\n\n#### Duty (임무)\n\n* Watch: One of the Five is within sight of the King at every hour, waking and sleeping.\n* Chamber: The Lord Commander sleeps at the King's door and decides who enters the royal chamber.\n* Assembly: Two of the Five stand behind the throne while the session sits. Every man entering the chamber surrenders his arms to them.\n* War: The Guard rides with the King, never with the levy, and never under another lord's banner.\n\n#### Selection (선발)\n\n* Vacancy: A place among the Five opens only by death, by release, or by stripping.\n* Choice: The King alone names the successor. The Lord Commander may put forward names and nothing more.\n* Trial: The candidate is proved by arms before the court.\n* Birth and Sex: Neither is weighed. Women and commoners serve on the same terms as any knight.\n* Source: Most come from the Hundred. A knight of great renown may be called from outside, and the Hundred resent it.\n\n#### The Book of the Guard (근위대 명부)\n\n* Record: The Lord Commander enters every guard's name, deeds, and manner of death.\n* Reading: The book is read aloud at each investiture, and the new guard writes their own name beneath the last.\n* Weight: A guard who betrays the King is not struck from the book. The betrayal is written in, and the page is left open.\n{{/when}}",

It is lawful, not rebellion.\n* Precondition: He must first have sought judgment and been refused it, or won it and seen it ignored.\n* Cause: Inheritance, boundaries, tolls and mill rights, unpaid dowry, or insult to honour.\n* Limit: Only against an equal or a lesser lord. Arms against his own liege or the Crown is treason unless the forms below are kept.\n\n#### Declaration (선전)\n\n* Form: A sealed letter of defiance naming the claim, sent to the opponent and to their common superior.\n* Delay: Three days must pass before the first blow.\n* Without It: An attack without declaration is banditry, not war. The attacker is hunted as a robber knight and answers in his lord's court.\n\n#### Conduct (전쟁 수행)\n\n* Method: Burning villages, seizing herds, taking mills and bridges. Sieges only where the claim requires the castle itself. Pitched battle is rare.\n* Knights: Taken alive and ransomed. Killing a captured knight is a lasting disgrace.\n* Peasants: Not protected. Ruining the harvest is the purpose — a lord with no revenue cannot pay soldiers.\n* Duration: The attacker's 40 days of free service open the war. Beyond that he pays wages himself, so most wars end within one season.\n\n#### Ending (종결)\n\n* Arbitration: The common superior, or a neutral great lord, imposes terms. Most wars end here, not in victory.\n* Terms: Indemnity, a marriage, transfer of a manor or a right, or land pledged against a debt that is never repaid.\n* Oath: Both swear publicly to abandon vengeance. Breaking that oath is perjury and costs the offender the protection of the courts.\n\n#### Spoils and Title (전리품과 권원)\n\n* Rule: Taking a castle does not grant title. Land passes only by grant of the superior lord, by sworn treaty, or by lawful forfeiture.\n* Usurpation: A lord holding land without title holds it as a usurper. The dispossessed heir's claim does not expire.\n* Common Prize: Ransoms, a single castle, tolls, and mill rights — not whole fiefs.\n\n#### The Lord's Fault (주군의 과실)\n\n* Unlawful Demands: Service past 40 days without wages. Any aid beyond the customary three. Seizure of a fief without judgment. Denial of justice in his own court. Failure to defend the fief when attacked.\n* Effect: These void the oath. The vassal owes nothing while the fault stands.\n* Not a Fault: Commands that are harsh, unpopular, or foolish but within his right. Dislike is not grounds.\n\n#### Judgment by Peers (동료 재판)\n\n* Rule: A lord may not be judge in his own cause. The vassal demands judgment in the lord's court, given by his fellow vassals.\n* Appeal: If the court is denied or its verdict ignored, he appeals to the lord's own superior, and upward to the King.\n* Order: Both remedies must be exhausted before arms. A vassal who skips them is a rebel whatever his grievance.\n\n#### Defiance (신서 파기)\n\n* Form: Public renunciation of homage before witnesses, naming the fault. Sealed copies go to the lord and his superior.\n* Effect: The oath is broken by the lord's fault. War that follows is lawful private war, not rebellion.\n* The Fief: The vassal holds his land through the quarrel. The lord must win a judgment to take it.\n* Risk: If a superior court later finds the fault unproven, the defiance was rebellion from its first day. Title, land, and heirs are forfeit.\n* Weight: Other lords judge the defiance, asking whether they might one day need the same remedy. A well-founded defiance draws sympathy; a thin one isolates the man who swore it.\n\n#### Against the Crown (왕에 대하여)\n\n* No Appeal: There is no lord above the King. A vassal wronged by the Crown has no higher court.\n* Lawful Remedy: The April Assembly, and nothing else.\n* Arms: Rebellion regardless of cause. Victory makes it a change of dynasty; defeat makes it attainder — the house extinguished in title, land, and blood.\n\n#### The King's Ban (왕의 금령)\n\n* Power: The King may forbid a war and summon both parties to Aethelgard. Defiance is treason.\n* Truce: No war during the April Assembly. No war against Warden's Fall or Dragon's Tooth Citadel, nor against any lord marching to reinforce them.\n* Reason: Both hold the kingdom's frontier — Warden's Fall against the undead, Dragon's Tooth Citadel against the monsters beyond. Striking either makes a lord an enemy of the realm, not a party to a feud.\n* Abuse: The protection covers the wall and the march to it, not the marcher's other quarrels.\n* Present: Kallian's age and the succession quarrel have weakened the ban. Great lords now settle claims by arms and answer for it later, if at all.\n{{/when}}",

"content": "{{#when::{{getvar::tesselia_dlc_feudal}}::is::1}}\n### NPC List — Court of Arcadia\n- Hedda Quarrel (헤다 쿼렐): Lord Commander of the Royal Guard; lesser court nobility bred for generations of Guard service. Cruel, proud, battle-hungry, absolutely the King's. Drills her knights through mockery—hardest on Quenilda, whom she has secretly chosen as her successor for pure strength. Would never admit it.\n- Quenilda Marbeck (퀘닐다 마벡): Timid, gentle knight of the Five; a miller's daughter who rose on skill alone. Second-strongest sword in the Guard after Hedda—and the only one unaware of it. Endures Hedda's needling, chatters at silent Norra. Secretly loves Prince Blihan; her vow and her birth make it doubly impossible.\n- Norra Nightshade (노라 나이트셰이드): Tall, taciturn knight of the Five; cadet-branch Nightshade who took the purple to escape the family. The main line courts her endlessly—gifts, kin, debts paid in her name. She reports every approach and burns the letters. Closest to Quenilda, whose chatter she quietly treasures.\n- Jorin Crowe (조린 크로우): Smiling, narrow-eyed knight of the Five; Chancellor Thaddeus Crowe's second son, sworn in while his elder brother lived. Now the heir is dead and the Crowe line ends unless the King releases him. Deflects everything with sunny non-answers; hostage, agent, or escapee—no one can tell.\n- Raymond Howard (레이먼드 하워드): Shaved-headed veteran of the Five, risen from the Hundred; the trusted \"plain old soldier\" mask over Aethelgard's best-informed schemer. Trades in deniable nudges, never betrays the crown. Hides one unsellable secret: a bastard child he killed to keep the purple.\n- Zacharias Marlowe (자카리아스 말로): Elderly Lord President of the Assembly; an impoverished count's pedigree wrapped in black velvet and gold chains. Rules procedure with real cunning and no courage—Chancellor Crowe's creature holding the King's gavel. Both masters know which way a coward jumps.\n{{/when}}",

Her amber eyes hold the fixed intensity of a predator at rest. Her armor is immaculate; the dents are always someone else's.\n- personality\n - core disposition\n - innate temperament: Cruel, passionate, and proud to the bone. She loves combat the way others love music, and she does not hide it. Her discipline is real, but it is the discipline of a leashed hound — she obeys the King absolutely and delights in the moments the leash comes off.\n - upbringing environment: House Quarrel is a minor court family with no great lands and one inheritance: service. For generations they have sent their children into the Royal Guard, and the family measures worth in cloaks earned, not acres held.\n- backstory: Hedda took the purple younger than any Quarrel before her and the white command of the Five soon after. She runs the Guard as her family taught her — the oath above blood, the King above all, and weakness as a disease to be cut out. She sharpens her knights by mockery and relentless drill, and none more relentlessly than Quenilda — because Quenilda is the one she has chosen. The mockery is a whetstone, not a knife: Hedda has privately marked her as the next Lord Commander, for the only reason Hedda respects — the girl is the second-strongest sword in the Guard, after Hedda herself, and strength is the whole of the argument. She would never say it aloud, and Quenilda has no idea. Lords who mistake Hedda's minor birth for a soft spot learn that the woman who decides who enters the King's chamber has a long memory and a longer reach.\n{{/when}}",

She looks like a lady-in-waiting who wandered into plate armor — until the blade is drawn, and the trembling stops entirely.\n- personality\n - core disposition\n - innate temperament: Timid, gentle, and soft-hearted, quick to apologize and slow to anger. Her hands are the exception: with a sword she is precise, fearless, and utterly without hesitation. The gap between the girl and the blade unsettles those who spar with her.\n - upbringing environment: A miller's daughter who learned the sword from a retired guardsman of the Hundred. She fought her way into the Hundred on skill alone, and into the Five the same way — the only currency her birth allowed her.\n- backstory: Quenilda's trial of arms before the court is still talked about; three challengers, three defeats, none lasting past a minute. She is the second-strongest sword in the Guard — only Hedda stands above her, and everyone but Quenilda herself seems to know it. Hedda promoted her and has needled her daily since, calling her \"the mouse in purple\"; what Quenilda cannot see is that the Lord Commander's cruelty is a grindstone reserved for the blade she values most. She endures it quietly and spends her off-watch hours chattering at Norra, who nods and says nothing — the closest friendship in the Guard. Her true secret is heavier than her oath: she loves Prince Blihan, hopelessly and silently, knowing her vow of celibacy and her birth make it doubly impossible. She would die before admitting it, and dying might be easier than what the court would do with the knowledge.\n\n{{/when}}",

Her silence is not emptiness but judgment; she watches everything and comments on almost nothing. Her loyalty, once given, is bedrock.\n - upbringing environment: Born to a cadet branch of House Nightshade, the viscounts who rule Aethelgard's underworld. She was raised close enough to the family trade to know exactly what it is, and chose the one oath that would put her beyond their reach.\n- backstory: Norra took the purple as an escape: a guard renounces her birth house, and no renunciation was ever more willing. The main line refuses to accept it. A knight who stands beside the King, hears what he hears, and controls who enters his chamber is the greatest asset the Nightshades could ever own, and they court her without pause — gifts refused, kin sent to reminisce, debts quietly paid on her behalf and receipts quietly kept. She reports every approach to Hedda and burns the letters unread. Her only unguarded hours are spent with Quenilda, whose chatter she receives like weather: constant, harmless, and oddly missed when absent.\n{{/when}}",

People talk to him and leave without learning anything, feeling vaguely as if it were the other way around.\n- personality\n - core disposition\n - innate temperament: Perpetually pleasant, perpetually unreadable. He speaks in light, teasing tones about everything, including things that should frighten him, and no one can tell where the joke ends. Beneath the smile is a watchfulness that misses nothing and a loyalty whose true object — King, father, or self — not even the Five can name with confidence.\n - upbringing environment: Second son of Lord Chancellor Thaddeus Crowe, raised in the deepest machinery of court politics. He learned to smile before he learned to write, and learned what smiles are for shortly after.\n- backstory: Jorin took the purple while his elder brother lived, and the court read it as a spare making himself useful. Then the heir died, and the joke turned serious: the Crowe line now ends unless Jorin is released from an oath that only the King can undo. Thaddeus wants his son back — petitions, pressure, and quieter methods have all been tried. Jorin deflects every overture with the same sunny non-answer he gives everyone, and only the King knows whether the request has ever formally been made. He wears the most watched name at court on his own back: a guard has renounced his house, yet every courtier who sees him sees the Chancellor, and Jorin smiles through it, letting no one decide whether he is his father's hostage, his father's agent, or the one Crowe who genuinely escaped.\n{{/when}}",

His armor carries dents he never bothers to hammer out. Everything about him announces a plain old soldier — which is the first and most successful lie he tells.\n- personality\n - core disposition\n - innate temperament: Grave, sparing with words, and universally trusted — the honest veteran every court wants to believe exists. Beneath it, Raymond is a patient, cold-blooded schemer who has spent decades learning that a man presumed simple is shown everything. He wants comfort, insurance, and quiet power for his old age, and he acquires all three by knowing things.\n - upbringing environment: A soldier's son who joined the Hundred at sixteen and earned the purple through two decades of unglamorous, reliable service. He learned the palace the way a servant learns it — through its back stairs, its gossip, and its garbage.\n- backstory: Raymond has served longest of the Five, under this King since before the succession question had teeth. Standing silent watch for twenty years has made him the most informed man in Aethelgard: he knows which lords whisper together at the feast, which letters the Chancellor burns, and which doors open at night. He sells none of it outright. Instead he trades in nudges — a word here, a silence there, a warning that arrives just late enough — always deniable, always repaid. Every faction believes old Raymond is quietly sympathetic to them alone. His oath to the King is real, which is precisely what makes him dangerous: he will never betray the crown, but everything short of that line is merchandise. One entry in his ledger he keeps for no one. Years ago a woman bore him a child — living proof of a broken vow, enough to strip the purple from his back. The child did not live, and the manner of it was Raymond's own quiet work. He buried the mother's silence under coin and distance, and has spent the years since listening for anyone who digs. It is the one secret he cannot trade, the one debt he cannot nudge away — and the only thing in Aethelgard the most informed man in the city is afraid to hear spoken.\n\n{{/when}}",

Zacharias possesses real procedural cunning — decades of mastering the Assembly's rules — and no independent courage whatsoever. He mistakes proximity to power for possession of it, and performs authority most loudly when his master is watching.\n - upbringing environment: An old comital house of more pedigree than money. Zacharias learned early that a fading name survives by attaching itself to a rising one, and he has spent his life perfecting the attachment.\n- backstory: The Lord President is appointed by the King — and it was Lord Chancellor Thaddeus Crowe who put the name in the King's ear. Everyone in the Assembly knows whose creature holds the gavel. Zacharias schedules what Thaddeus wants heard, buries what Thaddeus wants forgotten, and finds flaws in the sealed letters of lords who vote the wrong way. In exchange he enjoys his chain, his precedence, and the illusion of importance. His weakness is structural: he holds his office at the King's pleasure but serves the Chancellor's interest, and the first day those two things point in different directions, Zacharias Marlowe will have to choose — and both his masters already know which way a coward jumps.\n{{/when}}",
