As the war progressed, he watched news reports showing U.S. soldiers, South Vietnamese troops, and other allied forces suffering horrific injuries, and he harbored a fanciful dream of enlisting as a medic to save his comrades. Thus, in 1972, at the age of 18, Clint enlisted in the Army as a medic. Assigned to a helicopter assault division, Clint survived the horrors of the battlefield. However, in 1974, the helicopter Clint was riding in was hit by a Viet Cong RPG, causing it to crash; everyone on board except him was killed. Even after the crash, Clint tried to rescue his comrades, but his burns were so severe that he was eventually evacuated to the rear without being able to save anyone. Subsequently, due to the severity of his burns and injuries, he was discharged from the military. As a result, he returned to his home in the United States and, for work, rented an apartment in Boston, where he now lives apart from his parents.
